What is the best hot dog brand?

I am not a fan of hot dogs, but my husband and older son enjoy them. Their favorite is Kayem Beef Hot dogs which is a local brand. Out of the national brands our go to is Nathan's.

How many Christmas cards do you send?

We still send out approximately 50-60 cards a year. It's definitely work to pull it all together but I really enjoy receiving cards from friends and family far and wide every year; especially now when we aren't able to be together. I keep a list each year where I track who we receive cards from. If it's been a few years since we received one then we decide if we want to take them off. Usually just when I decide to remove someone we get one from them again!

What are the best gift cards for teachers?

We often do Target or Dunkin Donuts but these days we turned to Amazon since so many people including our family are ordering so many items online.

Does the leprechaun visit your house?

I used to do things like the green food coloring in the toilet and green marker (erasable) on the mirrors. Honestly it was one of those things I started because the kids made leprechaun traps in preschool and other families were doing things at home. Now that my kids are older we stopped doing it and I'm just fine with that!

Have you ever used a child leash?

We used one for a brief amount of time with our older son also around 2 when our second was born and we were going to busy places. I don't recall getting any dirty looks but it was worthwhile for us for that brief window of time when he was into bolting away. We all do the best we can, no need for the judgment especially when it's your child's safety in mind!

Do you quarantine your kids when one is sick?

It really depends on what type of illness. If it's a cold or something then no, it's not worth trying to keep them apart. However if it's a stomach bug type of thing we do our best to quarantine them from the rest of the house to try and stop the spread. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't but that's a misery I'd rather spare "sharing."

At what age do you stop reading bedtime stories?

Both of my boys are older and good readers but my 10 year old still enjoys having me read to him once in a while. We have done a few chapter books this way and it's a nice bonding experience for both of us.

When did your child start to walk?

Both of my kids started walk between 12-13 months. I know plenty of babies start sooner but it was kind of nice not having to chase after them so much too soon!

How much time do you spend driving kids to activities?

A lot of it depends on the time of year. My kids take the bus so I don't drive them to school but during fall and spring soccer seasons and 2 kids on 2 different travel teams we do an awful lot of driving back and forth.

Does your local library charge late fees?

Our library does charge a fine but they will have at least one time a year where you can donate items for the food pantry in lieu of fines. I'm actually pretty good on remembering to return books or renew on time but I think a major factor is that our library's system is set up to send an email reminder a couple of days before an item is due.

Do you let your child win when playing board games?

I agree, I definitely would lean towards letting my kids take turns winning when they were young to avoid too many meltdowns. As they've gotten older we definitely keep it more real and try to encourage being a good sport as that's an invaluable life lesson.

How many times per week do you go to the grocery store?

I'd love to make it a once a week errand, but I find myself going on average 2 times a week while even more some weeks. I'm good at planning out my meals for the week, but sometimes I find there is certain produce or ingredients I don't want to buy too far ahead plus there always seems to be something out at the store or only carried at a place like Whole Foods which necessitates another trip.

For everyday car trips, what does your family listen to?

While it's often my choice or what's on the radio, now that my kids are older and have their own music tastes I do let them have a say in what we listen to.

How many times has your family moved since having kids?

We moved once with our kids when they were almost 2 and 4. Since they were so young it really wasn't too hard of a transition and we even kept our older son in his same preschool since we didn't move too far away. It was nice though that we were living in our current town when both kids started kindergarten and making local friends.

Do you parent the way your parents did?

I wouldn't say we purposely parent differently, I just think that raising kids in our current world is a heck of a lot different than when I was growing up and parenting styles have to adapt.

How often do your kids take a bath or shower?

My boys are at the age where daily showers are a must, especially when sports are added to the mix.

Parents, does your child's school build in snow days?

Built in snow days are a must living in New England. At least we have a better idea of when school will let out for planning purposes. We luckily haven't had to use any yet this year but the last few years we've been inundated with snow days particularly in the February/March time frame so I'm not getting too excited about getting out earlier in June just yet!

Does your family eat leftovers?

My husband and I usually eat leftovers from dinner for lunches the following day. I much prefer to have leftovers to heat up than making a sandwich or something else for lunch.

Have you jumped on the elderberry train??

It's not something we've used much in our house, but my mother-in-law swears by it. I've seen a bunch of recipes to make your own in the instant pot, maybe it's something I'll have to try out.

Do you take your kids out of school for vacations?

We did it once when my kids were in Kindergarten and 2nd grade and it worked out ok even though it is frowned upon by the schools. Now that they are in older grades I don't think it's worth it for the amount of school work missed. Some teachers are more accommodating than others but I've heard it can be really hard to catch up on everything after missing a significant number of days. Now, if it's just a matter of missing a day to take advantage of cheaper flights than I could see the advantage, but not a whole week or more.
