Granny Mobile

The second part of Bluey Season 3 just dropped, and my family binge-watched them all. The funniest by far was Granny Mobile! The girls are playing "Grannies" with Muffin, who is playing a grouchy granny. They wind up at a garage sale, and Muffin's encounter with a real grouchy granny is priceless! It's the funniest video I've watched this week.

Bagels and Cream Cheese

Looking for an easy breakfast, but "cereal" is off the table because transporting a gallon of milk on the long drive is problematic? Try bagels and cream cheese. There are many fresh and frozen options of bagels, many flavors of cream cheese, and a number of options to kick it up a bit -- peanut butter, strawberry or banana slices, lox, etc.

Jack Black is incomparable as the voice of Bowser. My son won't stop singing the song Peaches!

It's So Amazing! A Book about Eggs, Sperm, Birth, Babies, and Families

Robie Harris is a national treasure! We just used another Robie Harris book -- "It's Not a Stork" to have the talk with our 6-yo and 9-yo at the same time. "Stork" covered the basics of where babies come from, how they grow, and the differences between male and female bodies, at probably the most introductory level that I would want to go. We will definitely be acquiring more Robie Harris books when we want to get into more details about puberty and sex.

Junie B. Jones Series

Junie B. Jones is a kindergartner who means well, but has a little trouble with self-control (I can relate, and so can both of my kids). The books are short, sweet, laugh-out-loud, and carry positive messages, as Junie B. always (eventually) does the right thing to clean up her messes.

Sleeping Queens

Don't believe the age range on this -- my kiddos could explain the rules to grandma before they were old enough to hold the cards. This is one of the few games that you can play with kids age 4 and 9 at the same time.

Kids Against Maturity

I was prepared for poop and fart jokes, but there are a few more body part puns than I was ready for. I wound up going through the cards, reading them all, and taking a few dozen out of circulation, because I didn't want to explain what they meant to the kids. I mean, on family game night, who wants to explain to an 8-year old why the punchline is "a tiny pianist," "Mr. Hugh Jazz," or "Mexican Mudslide." I don't think I'm a prude -- we got a kick out of "Clifford the Big Red Dog's Big Brown Log" -- but this one has the potential to unintentionally educate, if you're not careful.

Bluey's Big Play (CAPA)

We saw Bluey's Big Play in Detroit. It's cute, with (I think) the same voices from the show, acted out by full-body puppets. There is no intermission, and the whole show is runs 50 minutes. The puppets are a pretty good blend of artistry and engineering. You can expect the same level of humor and heart that you would get from your favorite episodes.

The Mighty Ducks (1992)

Looking for something wintery that doesn't have a talking snowman? While you should probably preface this movie with a warning about language that was appropriate in the 1980s, this story of misfits and meanies who come together as a team is charming, heartwarming, and lasting.

The Sound of Music (1965)

While many of the themes may go over your kids' heads, this G-rated musical featuring a gaggle of children was a pleaser in our family. The second act may be a little long, but we have re-watched the first half to great success. Bonus - this movie provides the gentlest-possible introduction to the concept of World War II and the Nazis, which will surely be topics of conversation in your future.

How to Train Your Dragon (2010)

Oooo -- ooo! Peacock has two new animated series based on HTTYD! The Rescue Riders (first 2 seasons available on Netflix) are great for younger kids, and the Seven Realms is right in my 8-year old's wheelhouse.

Star Wars: A New Hope (1977)

I've loved Star Wars my whole life, but I've had some challenges getting my kids to embrace these movies. My son would rather watch the animated adventures of Lego Darth Vader than these movies. He has seen the original trilogy and the prequel trilogy. In retrospect, it was probably a mistake to show him Revenge of the Sith, which is by far the scariest, visually. If your kids prefer things a little lighter, starting with The Phantom Menace might be the easiest sell.

This movie is so much fun! I love that the message deals with embracing sadness, especially as it relates to memories that we can't relive.

Trader Joe's Gingerbread Turkey Decorating Kit

I realize that this is kind of a cop out -- buying pre-made cookies and frosting with pre-packaged candies, then encouraging your kids to put the candies on on the cookies and not in their mouths. This puts the semi-homemade into homecrafts, and for the past two years, my kids have had an absolute blast decorating turkeys with their cousins!

Flat Pack

The episode starts with the Heelers coming home with a to-be-assembled furniture item (do they have Ikea in Australia?) While the parents assemble this in the background, making familiar assembly mistakes, Bluey and Bingo play with the packing material in a way that explores the evolution of life on Earth, gives insight in what it means to be a parent, and reveals the meaning of life. This might be the finest 6 minutes of film ever made!
