Will you let your kids use social media?

We allow our teens (16 and 14) to use social media, but only after family discussions about their safety, using discernment in posting, privacy settings, etc. And they know we will be checking up on them!

Do you use dry shampoo to save time? If so, do you have a favorite type?

I got a travel sized Not Your Mother's Clean Freak Dry Shampoo for camping, and found it works really well for my hair! I use it every once in awhile on mornings when I am in a rush. It's great for absorbing oil and adding back volume.

When you go to a campground - what do you prefer to stay in?

Tent camping is our favorite family activity. We've tried several brands of camping gear (which can make or break your camping trip - hello, leaky tent!), and found REI has the best quality camping gear. REI sleeping pads are so cushy I feel like I'm sleeping in a bed.

Where to buy backpacks that will last?

I bought my son a Land's End backpack (on clearance!) when he started first grade. This kid is not gentle with his things at all, but his Land End backpack made it through 8th grade before retiring. It was still in pretty great shape to tell you the truth, but we upgraded to a larger backpack for all his high school books.

Which cloth diapers are best?

We had such a great experience with Kawaii diapers. Kawaii Goodnight Heavy Wetters were amazing for overnight.

When did you start solids?

I started my kids on solids right at 6 months. They were all sitting well and showing an interest in what we were eating. I believe I started them all off with mashed bananas, followed by pureed squash, peas, and other veggies.

What do you do when children talk in a different voice? (do you encourage or do you discourage?)

Oh my goodness, I read an article about this happening! So cute.

This seems like a "there's a time and a place" issue to me. I think it is fun (and good!) for kids to express themselves in silly or creative ways BUT not at school, when the pediatrician asks them a question, etc. I would probably make a "silly voices stay home" rule.

When did your child start to walk?

Every baby is different! My 4 kids first walked at 10 months, 9 months (running so fast I could hardly catch her by her 1st birthday), 15 months (I was so glad to have break with this one!), and 12 months.

Would you let a preschooler wear whatever they want?

So smart to have a backup plan, Lisa. They can be so quick to change their minds! My daughter also wore her favorite princess dress to the library or grocery store on the regular. It did make other people happy - who doesn't love a preschooler in a princess dress or superhero costume?

My older son is the same way. He hates jeans and dress pants (poor kid has to wear school uniforms every day). He strips the second we walk in the door, lol. He has always reminded me of Huckleberry Finn - just can't tame him.

My older daughter has always been something of a fashion diva (the first time she crawled it was toward pink, sparkly shoes). She often wore creative (non-matching) outfits to preschool, which was fine by me. I drew the line at dress-up clothes (like princess dresses) or her top choice (swimsuit), so many tears were spilled! I love seeing kids express their own sense of style.

Did you and your significant other go out for Valentine's Day?

Yes, but not on Valentine's Day itself. My parents were able to watch our kids for a few hours the Saturday after Valentine's Day. Our dates are far & few between so we are really thankful to have some kid-free time together!

Have you traveled internationally with your kids?

We've taken our kids on a few international cruises, which is such a fun & easy way to travel outside the US with kids. We haven't had the time/money to fly internationally with them, but I imagine that would be more difficult. Switching time zones would definitely throw my little ones for a loop!

How many times per week do you go to the grocery store?

I used to get away with shopping once a week, but now that I have 2 teens (and a 2 yr old who eats more than the 5 yr old) I have to go twice. We are up to 6-7 gallons of milk a week. Anyone selling a dairy cow? 😂

Do you allow your child to have friends sleepover?

We allow sleepovers, but typically only with families we know and trust. Cousins and best friends mostly!

Best diaper rash cream?

Coconut oil is cloth-diaper safe too! It worked wonders for us.

Have you jumped on the elderberry train??

My mother-in-law bought us everything we need to make elderberry syrup & gummies and taught us how to make it when she was here over the holidays. It is easy to make, tastes great, and seems to be working. The downside for me is that the ingredients are expensive (although I'm guessing we save some $ making it on our own).

Are there any activities that you "make" your kids try?

We have never forced our kids to try an activity. However, if they've asked to sign up for something, we make them honor that commitment until the season or session is over, even if they change their minds halfway through (which has happened!). My husband says, "We pay? You play."
