Will you let your kids use social media?

My oldest (13) recently asked for social media (in the form of Tik Tok). After lots of discussion and reading about it, my husband and I agreed to let him have it. However, he is not allowed to post any videos or friend any strangers. And he knows Mom and Dad have full access to his account to check in on what he's doing on there. So far it has worked out fine for him, but I realize each child is different and not sure I'll feel the same way for my 11 or 8.5 year old when they get to that stage.

Mom Hacks: What are your best cleaning & organizing tips for families?

I keep a small trash can (found on Amazon) in my car. I have trained my kids to clean up their messes in the car and put into the trash can. Surprisingly my car remains somewhat clean thanks to the help from my family.

What age is Hamilton appropriate for?

My boys were obsessed with the soundtrack at very young ages (7 and 9) and could recite most of the songs word-for-word. I don't really think they paid much attention to the lyrics at the time. Then we took them to see the play when they were almost 9 and 11. Of course they loved the live action (we all did)! We watched the play on Disney+ when they were 10 and 12 and I think they were really able to retain more at the older ages.

How do you split holidays with both sides of your family?

We alternate Thanksgiving and Christmas every year with my husband's and my family. Neither family is close to us so we are usually traveling for both. We have it synced up with my sister's family who is 3 hours away so we get to see them at whatever holiday we are celebrating with my family.

When do you put presents under the Christmas tree?

We have two Christmas celebrations with the kids. One is gifts from Mom and Dad, usually on Christmas Eve or the day before we travel in we are going out of town to see family. And the second is on Christmas morning with gifts from Santa. Now that the kids are a bit older, I can put the Mom and Dad gifts out as I wrap them and they are (mostly) patient enough to wait to open. There is definitely something magical about a big pile of presents from Santa on Christmas morning!

Oh no! That does not sound like fun.

On average, does your family vacation away for Christmas?

We alternate every year visiting family (usually 3-6 hours away depending on where we go) and staying home. Once the kids are done believing in Santa, my husband and I have talked about getting away somewhere warm for Christmas on the years we stay home.

Funny Christmas Jokes for Kids?

Ha! I like this one. My kids always fight over the advent calendar and complain that they have to share. I'm sure they'd love to get caught stealing it.

Haha. This is a good one. Oh the mess on Christmas morning! My OCD has trouble handling it every year.

How many Christmas cards do you send?

Every year I try to cut back, but every year my husbands adds people back in. Haha!

What is the best Girl Scout cookie?

Now in my third year of having a Girl Scout, I must admit, I've bought and eaten more cookies than I care to admit. After all my research, I think my favorite is definitely the Tagalongs.

Do you let your kids sleep in your bed?

I like my sleep and having kids in my bed takes away from my sleep. No kids allowed ever! Ha!

How long do you stay out for Halloween?

Our city only has a 2- hour window for trick or treat. As my kids are getting older, we have stayed out the entire two hours. They are very motivated by candy. Lol!

What time do your kids go to sleep?

Three kids - 11, 9 and 6. My youngest goes to bed at 8, but reads in bed so doesn’t fall asleep until closer to 9. My older two share a room and have a 9pm bedtime. They also read and don’t go to bed until closer to 10. My oldest is a big reader and has told me he’s usually up until 11:30pm reading!

Do your kids do educational workbooks over the summer?

Our school hands out a book called “Brain Games” at the end of the year. I make my kids complete that book, but find it to be a struggle as they get older. The reward for competing Brain Games is the kids get to pick out a free book at the fall book fair.

Should kids wear sunscreen to school?

I don’t think sunscreen is necessary for the 30 minutes my kids spend outside for recess in a day.

Married moms, did you keep your wedding dress?

I still have mine sitting in a box in my basement. My mom preserved it for me after our wedding and it’s been in that box for 13.5 years! I do have a daughter so hoping that maybe she will want to “use” part of my dress for her own someday.

How do you feel about direct sales parties (Facebook or in-home)?

I hate to admit it, but I don’t like being invited to these parties. Even though they say no pressure to buy, you always feel the pressure. If I want something, I’d rather contact the consultant to order.

We have a huge island where my kids eat at the stools so if they spill it’s on the hardwood floor and not a rug. Even at almost 11, almost 9 and 6, I still don’t trust them!
