Hermann Park Conservancy

The Hermann Park Conservancy is one of the most beautiful parks in Houston! And what better way to experience it with your little ones than by train! The Hermann Park Railroad wanders along a two mile track (about 18 minutes of journey time) around the park. The train departs from Kinder Station (where tickets are sold) approximately every half hour (25-30 minutes). Get off the train and explore at any stop! For avid enthusiasts, explore train programming offered on site!

Cost: $3.50 per person (adults and children 1 year and up); $7.00 all day pass (weekdays only; excludes holidays).

Prairie Center for the Arts - The Nutcracker

The Al Larson Prairie Center for the Arts presents the classic Nutcracker with the Schaumburg Dance Ensemble. The small theatre means that there isn't a bad seat in the house, so it is ideal for the youngest performance enthusiasts!

Crystal Lake Main Beach and West Beach Ice Rinks

Ice Skating outdoors can be more than just rink skating! In Crystal Lake, the Park District carefully monitors the conditions of Crystal Lake and - when the ice is thick enough - opens skating for public use! There are two access points to skate the Lake, but I recommend skating at Main Beach for it's access to restrooms and other amenities! Benches and skate mats are available at Main Beach once the rink is cleared. Hockey goals are set up at both Main and West. The skating areas are lighted in the evening, too.

Veteran Acres Park Sled Hill is a great spot to sled with the family! Part of the Crystal Lake Park District, the sledding area has lighting available in the evening and also provides access to restrooms and shelters. Check the sledding hill status on their website before heading out to make sure sledding is open!

Old School Forest Preserve

Old School Forest Preserve offers families an array of amenities that make this nature destination one of the best around! With a playground, public parking, toilets and access to water, this is an ideal place to spend the day in nature with the little ones. But, this particular location gets an Upparent nod for making nature hiking accessible even into the winter months! This forest preserve offers solar lit nature hikes and even stays open late on designated dates for folks to hike or snowshoe along the 1.3 mile fitness trail!

Soldier Field Sled Hill

Downtown with the family when the snow falls? No problem! Soldier Field is so much more than just a football stadium. The beautifully renovated, 30 acres of parkland around the stadium was designed for public use and features a well-curated sled hill (among other family friendly areas for seasonal use such as a Children's Garden). Park in the Waldron parking garage for sled hill use (and public restroom).

Constitution Park in River Forest offers a beautifully-maintained ice rink in the winter months. Constitution Park is located in a peaceful, quiet, family-friendly neighborhood. When operational, the rink use has both free skate hours and hockey use hours. Please note that the ice rink open/closed status will be posted on site by a colored flag system: green indicates that the rink is open and red indicates that the rink is closed. The ice rink is unsupervised. Skate at your own risk.

Woodland Trails Sled Hill

The Woodland Trails sled hill is open to the public for recreational use. The slope is extremely well-maintained and has served both the Mt. Prospect and Prospect Heights communities for years! The slopes are located near the Weiss Community Center, as such access to Community Center resources (indoor heat and washroom, among other facilities) make this an ideal place to go sledding! Additional parking at the Grace Lutheran Church is available for crowded days.

Sunset Woods Park, Park District of Highland Park

At the start of every season, when weather permits (20 or colder for 5 straight days), the staff at Sunset Woods Park flood an ice rink and the outdoor skate fun begins! The rink has separate sections for hockey and recreational skating. For the safety of all patrons, helmets are required in the hockey rink. Skating is free, and the rink is well lit by existing park lights.
