The Wild Robot

This movie was so good! Everyone loved it, from our 5-year-old to our teen, to mom and dad. Beautifully animated and a wonderful story.

Brookfield Zoo

A wonderful zoo!

  • A child observing two peacocks resting on the ground near a wall in a zoo setting.
  • Four children sitting on a large animal-shaped chair in a sunny park setting.
  • Three giraffes standing near a wooden fence in a zoo, with visitors watching nearby.
  • Two children and an adult pose on a lion statue at Brookfield Zoo, with a red sign in the background.

Charlotte's Web (1973)

If your first grader just read Charlotte's Web at school, they'll love seeing the story come to life in this classic animated feature that is sweetly true to the book. We watched it for family movie night at my first grader's request, and it was a fun trip down memory lane, as my husband and I both remember watching it when we were in elementary school. I was surprised by how sad my preschooler got when Wilbur first found out he was destined to be killed, so beware for sensitive younger kids who don't already know there will be a (mostly) happy ending!

LEGO Sudoku Game

Use colors instead of numbers to play a game of LEGO Sudoku! The tutorial from Frugal Fun 4 Boys & Girls uses a six square grid, but if you want an additional challenge, you can build it as a nine-square grid as well.

LEGO Catapult

This tutorial has a lot of wiggle room so you can use bricks you already have. Just add a rubber band, and let the catapulting fun begin!

DIY LEGO Chess Board & Pieces

Make your own chess board using flat LEGO bricks, and mix & match characters (or other LEGOs!) for the pieces. This LEGO project is very forgiving, with lots of room for creativity - as long as you have two noticeably different color themes, and enough pieces to serve as pawns, bishops, etc, you can successfully create and play a fun LEGO game of chess!

Big Hero 6 (2014)

I had never heard of this movie when our kids got it as a gift, but it is now one of our favorite animated films ever. The story and animation are super cool, but I especially loved the diverse set of characters and their interactions and growth as they deal with and move through a devastating loss (spoiler alert - the death of a loved one early on is a central theme of the story, so beware if your kids are more sensitive).

Memory LEGO Game

Set up a variety of LEGOs on a baseplate. Use more or fewer LEGOs to adjust the difficulty level, but 7-10 pieces is probably a good place to start. Give players time to look at the set up; 10-20 seconds should be enough. Once the time is up, take the base away (or cover it), and have players try to recreate what they saw on their own baseplate.

Missing LEGO Game

This game puts a LEGO spin on What's Missing, one of my favorite games to play when we're eating out with the kids. Line up several LEGO pieces next to each other, and give players a chance to look at the lineup. Then, have them close their eyes, take one of the pieces away, and hide it. Have players guess what's missing!

Small to Big Tower LEGO Game

See who can build the tallest tower, with a catch! Every piece you add has to be bigger than the last. This game is my favorite on Frugal Fun for Boys and Girl's list of awesome LEGO party games, but I also really like her Treasure Tower game, which is sort of like the "Pass the Parcel" game with LEGOs.

LEGO Marble Run

Frugal Fun 4 Boys and Girls has so many cool ideas for LEGO builds, projects and activities, but my favorite is her tutorial for making a marble run out of LEGOs. The cool thing is that she provides plenty of helpful tips and ideas for how to make it, along with photos of the one she built, but does NOT give you step by step instructions to build it exactly the same way. That way, kids can enjoy the challenge of a making their own unique and creative LEGO build.

DIY LEGO Marble Maze Game

We used to have one of those wooden marble mazes when I was a kid, where you had to tilt the board to move a marble around a series of paths to get to the end. I loved playing with it, and never realized how easy it is to make a DIY version of the game using LEGOs!
