COVID-19: Family Quarantine Silver Linings

I have done so much covid cleaning! I've taken advantage of contactless exchanges to sell quite a few things on Facebook Marketplace, and also have a growing donation pile. It's very rewarding, and my decluttering efforts have had positive effects on my children's imaginations and creativity. It's been fun to see! Amazon Giveaway.

Is it your family tradition to visit the Easter Bunny?

We have not done Easter Bunny pictures. We do like to visit Santa at Christmas time, but just haven't gotten into seeing the Easter Bunny.

Have you ever used a child leash?

We haven't used one. I remember that my mom used one with my younger sister for a little while. Our two-year old is a firecracker, so I'm not ruling out the possibility that it could be a helpful option for us at some point!

Have you gotten professional pictures taken of your newborns?

We've done all of these things. We got the hospital ones for our first 3 babes and have also used a professional photographer outside of the hospital a couple times. And, of course, we've taken our own as well. I just love capturing the beauty of these first days when they're so tiny and squishy. :)

Does the leprechaun visit your house?

Last year, the leprechaun set up a treasure hunt around our house. I anticipate that the kiddos will probably expect that he will do that again this year. ;)

When did your child start to walk?

All of our kids walked around 15-16 months. Babies walking under a year amaze me! ;)

Did you and your significant other go out for Valentine's Day?

We did not go out. We did pick up cupcakes from the local cupcake store, which was a fun treat. :)

Do you parent the way your parents did?

I think that a lot of my parents' parenting styles have rubbed off on me. They were protective in a laid back kind of way. My husband shows some characteristics from his parents. It tends to be a good balance for us. One of us makes sure that the kids are properly dressed for winter and the other one assures them that if they're only missing one glove, it's really gonna be fine--just roll with it. ;)

Are you spending less personal time on social media than you used to?

I feel like this is a constant struggle. As a stay-at-home mom, I'm always trying to strike a balance between being responsive and connected to friends and family outside of my home, while trying to be completely available to my kids at the same time. It's easy to get lost in a text conversation with a friend when I'm "supposed" to be immersed in some game of make believe in real life. ;) I think it's something that I am continuously working on.

At what age did your kids understand that people don't live forever?

This is a good question. My four-year old has hit the existential question stage pretty hard core. Her: What happens at the end of the days? Me: At the end of the day, we go to bed. Her: No. What happens at the end of ALL the days? Me: Oh, I see. Hmmm. ;)

How many times per week do you go to the grocery store?

When we had just one or two kids, I used to go more often. The grocery story was an outing for us. Now that we've recently had our fourth, I try to go just once a week because it's harder to get out with all of the kids in tow (not to mention that they take up all of the room in the cart!)

When did your child switch to a big kid bed?

We are a little all over the place here. Our oldest was probably 18 months when he moved out of the crib. Our second was closer to two-years old. Our third is now 27-months old, and is still happy as a clam in her crib. Our fourth is ready to move into it, haha, but his sister is not ready to vacate.

Have you jumped on the elderberry train??

I am definitely interested in learning more about this. Our son recently got over the LONGEST. COLD. EVER. I'm interested in anything that could help us not do that again. :)

Did your birthday child ever ask for donations instead of gifts?

I'm definitely intrigued by this idea, but I think it could be a hard sell for my kids. I think we could try something like suggesting that they choose some of their toys that they already own to donate to others in honor of their birthday, while still enjoying the excitement of new gifts.

What is the best age for Disney World?

We took our kiddos when they were 1, 2 and 4. They all loved it. The younger two probably don't remember it well, but the oldest has great memories of it and can't wait to go back! That was good timing for us because we knew that he would love it, and the younger two would have fun and were still at an age where it was free for them to get into Disney.

When do your kids' school lunches get made?

I've been making our son's lunch in the morning. This works for now, but when our younger kids start school, it will probably make sense to make all lunches the night before!

Do your kids make their own school lunches?

Our oldest is in kindergarten, so I have been making his lunch. I used to make my own lunch when I was in elementary school, so I plan to have him start to make his own lunch at some point as well.

Do you take your kids out of school for vacations?

Our oldest is in kindergarten, so this has become a topic of discussion for us. I recently had a conversation with a school parent whose oldest son just started high school. Based on his experience, he really encouraged me not to hesitate to take kids out of school for a vacation in the future. He said that he and his wife used to stress about it, but have realized that none of it matters now that their son is in high school. As a new school parent, I just thought it was an interesting conversation.

Do you throw your child a birthday party with friends every year?

This is a good question! I think for us, it will vary from year to year. Our oldest turned 6 in December. We have had birthday parties with friends for him a couple times in the past. This year, it seemed that the kids in his kindergarten class with birthdays earlier in the year did not have kid parties (at least not ones in which they invited the whole class), so we followed this trend. He was happy with a family party and a special family day!

Do you do spring cleaning as a family?

I agree with this! January is an ideal time for "spring cleaning" in our house, too. January is the last of our stretch of 4 kid birthdays in 4 months and, of course, we are still trying to find homes for all of the new Christmas toys so there is a lot of work to be done! Our oldest will sometimes help, but it is mostly mom and dad at this point.
