Do your kids garden?

Oh, and I meant to add -- Joanna Gaines and her kids just released an amazing picture book called "We Are the Gardeners" about cultivating their first garden as a family, setbacks and all. I stumbled across it in the "New" section at our library, and it's truly one of my new favorites. I rarely buy kids books at full price (we're more of a thrift store or yard sale family), but that one is going in my Amazon cart ASAP!

Do your kids garden?

We purchased our first house when I was pregnant with my first kiddo, and it sits on a mostly-open 1 acre lot. I've been dreaming for years about what we could do with all that space, and this spring/summer we're finally going to start our first vegetable garden. So excited to share that experience with my kids....even if everything wilts!

What are the best Broadway shows for kids?

I love the stage version of Beauty and the Beast! It's just similar enough to the familiar Disney movie for kids to understand everything, but just different enough to keep it fresh. The extra songs are some of my favorites.....and there's nothing like the magic of watching the beast turn into a prince right before your eyes!

How do you feel about direct sales parties (Facebook or in-home)?

I much prefer when consultants post video demonstrations of their products, or post before and after pics, or get a conversation going on a post about how people are seeing results, etc. I'm more likely to purchase something if they're just passionately showing how it works for their life....and I can reach out to them if I need or want it, too.

What age did your kid eat solid meat?

Many of the baby food "squeezies" have meat in the blends now, so that may be something to try to make sure she has what she needs while you transition!

When do you stop using the night light for your baby?

We just bought a Hatch light, which has white noise/nature sounds and can be programmed to change color when the child is allowed to get up. It's been a good transition for my toddler as he's beginning to fight his still-needed naps.

Do you stick to your usual bed time and routine when on vacation?

We're in Eastern Time and tend to travel west more often than not, so time zone changes mean our kids end up in bed later by default. A 7 PM bedtime here means we'd be starting our bedtime routine in the middle of dinner in Central or Mountain time!

Are you spending less personal time on social media than you used to?

Great question! I've found social media less effective now than it used to be for actually keeping relationships healthy, so I've intentionally backed away. It's so easy to get sucked in!

Does your local library charge late fees?

I'm terrible about returning books on time, so I consistently have a sizeable fine. At least it supports a worthy cause! (That's what I keep telling myself, anyway...)

Parents, does your child's school build in snow days?

We intend to homeschool, and I absolutely plan to allow snow days to be school holidays! One of the perks of not being tied to a district schedule :)

How do you plan weekly dinners for your family?

We’ve resolved to eat no fast food for the entire YEAR of 2019 as a way of kicking our drive-thru fallback to the curb. Yikes!! I don’t have any choice but to plan now! But I’m thankful we’re getting our acts together. There’s only so much McDonald’s a person can eat before it comes back to haunt you.

Oh, and the Paprika app is AMAZING for keeping your favorite online recipes on hand without having to sift through an entire blog post just to find the ingredients and instructions.

How do you plan weekly dinners for your family?

I have been desperately searching for a meal-planning method that reconciles my husband’s super-particular tastes and my desire to eat mostly plant-based. I’ve been pulling my hair out for the entire 7 years we’ve been married! But I recently hit on something that’s actually working (knock on wood): we sat down and came up with 14 simple meals we could agree on...Meals that could be slightly modified to suit us both and wouldn’t be too difficult or expensive or time-consuming. When we finally had our list, I wrote them each on a mini post it note and put them in the back of my planner. Now I can just pull out my stickies and place them on each day of the week, and we don’t have to repeat meals more than every two weeks!

What's your grocery shopping strategy?

That quarter is pretty alluring for my 2-year-old too ☺️

Do you do spring cleaning as a family?

That’s the story here too — I’ve spent the past 2-3 years purging different areas of our home, and it feels GOOD!

What's your grocery shopping strategy?

We are loyal Aldi shoppers! It’s way cheaper across the board, and way smaller than other grocery stores, so my husband doesn’t feel overwhelmed shopping there. He actually prefers to be the one to grocery shop, so he goes on his way home from work once a week. Works like a charm!

Do your kids manage the fall or spring time change better?

I was bracing myself for some serious crazy, but we haven’t had any issues with time changes yet! Fingers crossed, since my kiddos are still young...

How late can your child stay up on New Year's Eve?

We've attended an out-of-town church event on NYE nearly every year I can remember (both as a child AND an adult), so my whole family has consistently been up well past midnight. We're staying home this year, though. It feels so strange to think about everyone being able to go to bed earlier, but I just might do it for my own sanity! Toddlers who are up past midnight take a week to recover.

What age will you allow your daughter to wear makeup?

SUCH a good topic! I'm a boy mom for now, but if I ever have a daughter I think it will depend on her interest. I didn't start wearing any makeup until I was around 14, and always felt self-conscious because I looked so much younger than my makeup-wearing friends. I think the emphasis should be on WHY we wear makeup so there's no feeling that she's not beautiful enough without it. If she wants to cover up some acne or add a little color to blonde eyelashes, that's one thing. But a full-face cover up and contouring isn't necessary at that age. Or any age, really! Just my two cents.

What Winter holiday does your family celebrate?

I didn't include this as a poll option, but my favorite winter holiday is my birthday on December 28th -- I accept cash, checks, and Starbucks gift cards. ;)
